Having trouble getting IM up on the computer at work--blocked with popup blockers.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of using IM? It's almost like talking on the phone. It's real time, no waiting for responses like with email or snail mail. It improves communication.

How could you use IM in your personal and professional life? Improve communication with coworkers and patrons. Improve communication wiht family & friends.

If you were a patron would you use IM to ask reference questions? Well, I would if I were at home and by a computer. But if I were on a computer, a lot of the questions I could find the answers to myself.
